Ramadan started this year on Thursday 17 May. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a special month in which we fast between sunrise and sunset. Ramadan is therefore also called the fasting month of the Muslims. The exact beginning of Ramadan depends on the appearance of the sickle of the new moon.
Fasting is seen as a form of purifying the soul and thanking Allah for all that he has given. Ramadan teaches people self-discipline. The Muslims feel and show solidarity with the poor and hungry people everywhere in the world.
Muslims remember that in this month the Prophet Muhammad received the first of the revelations that together formed the Quran.
